Read Any Good Books Lately?

There's been an ongoing debate in my house.  Perhaps you can help me!  You see, I'm the proverbial multi-tasker.  I have to be doing something, well more to the point....many things....at once.  That's the only way I get to do all I have to do, trying to have a business and do my "mom" job.  Can you relate?

Well, there was a very long time span....maybe 20 years...when my kids were young, that I didn't read one book.  I hate to admit that, but it's true!  I wouldn't allow myself the time to just sit and read.  I still don't.  My mind wanders to the other things I should be doing.  I know.....that's bad, huh?

Then....about 5-6 years ago, I decided to try listening to books on CD, and well.....it changed my life.  I can listen to the book and doing something else....multi-task!  Now, I read about 20 books a year and love every minute of it!

Right now, I'm reading this book.....The Help, by Kathryn Stockett.  It's just wonderful.  I understand it will be made into a movie....and it should.  One of my favorite things to do when I read a book, is to be the casting director for the movie.  Who would I like to see play the roll of Skeeter?  Aibileen?  Minnie?  Do you do that, too?

Of all the books I read in 2010, this one was the one I enjoyed the most.  Envy, by Sandra Brown.  I would love to see this one made into a movie, too.  I highly recommend this book....what a great ride!

Now...for the dilemma.  There are some members of my family, whom shall remain nameless, who think that listening to a book is not reading a book.  I maintain that I "read" everyword, and just because I used a different sense...my ears instead of my eyes....I most definitely did read the book.  After all, I'm not listening to a Cliff Notes version!

So, dear reader, let me know what you think about my dilemma.  Do you take the time to read books?  What books are on your recommended readling list?

I've got some piecing to do today, and I hope to finish  The Help, and return it to the library.
Enjoy your day!   Pam

  1. If you are awake while you are reading and comprehending and enjoying the story...then you are reading it...

Do they email? Do they say they "talked to someone" when they have emailed someone? facebookers are notorious for that..
    same. thing.

I found a wonderful series of books by Faye Kellerman featuring Peter Decker and his wife Rina Lazarus...a jewish detective and his wife..very good cop mysteries and I am hooked...

  2. Pam, I listen to books while I sew and thoroughly enjoy them. And yes you are reading when you listen! I read "The Help" and thoroughly enjoyed it. Will have to look for "Envy" Another great one is "Saving Cee Cee Honeycutt" you should give it a try.

I currently have three books going one on CD to listen to, one on my NOOK, and one on the night stand.

  3. I love books on CD. I listen to them on my way to and from work and while I am sewing. My library doesn't have a very good selection and I quickly checked out all they had to offer. I will keep the books you recommended in mind.

  4. I found listening-reading this last summer. I use them to endure long car trips. I just listen to tunes when I sew, but I should try a book.

  5. I like to both read and listen to books. Sometimes I have two books going at the same time, one I am reading to and another one I am listening to. I listen to books when I sew or exercise .... sometimes I exercise longer because I want to find out what is going to happen. "The Help" was a book I listened to.
I haven't read "Envy", but I will put it on my list.

I love to listen to Vince Flynn and David Baldacci books.

  6. I started listening to books this past year. I found that I just didn't have time to read and sew. Now I can do both and I am thrilled. In my book....listening to a book is like reading one. For kids that hate to read, if they are introduced to books on tape (and I make my kids follow the text as well) it can turn them on to books.

  7. I enjoyed "The Help". You also might like "Sarah's Key", a book about WWII.
The chapters alternate between WWII and 2008.
I usually read books and listen to CDs (music) when I am quilting.

  8. The only time I listen to books is on long car trips. I get distracted otherwise, but I definitely count it as reading. I loved The Help. And I just started reading Remarkable Creatures by Tracy Chevalier and it drew me in right away. I also loved the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. I'll have to try Envy next. Thanks!

  9. Zowee- this is one of my favorite audio books too! I listen to it while sewing each time my husband leaves on a business trip.
