Nabby's Dowry Sew~Along ~ Part One

Welcome to Part One of my Nabby's Dowry Sew~Along!

I'm anxious to get started and I'm hoping you are, too!!
Ready, Set, Cut!

Cutting Instructions

From all of the 11" squares of light print and/or woven fabrics:

*Cut a total of (81) assorted 2 3/8" squares for Half Square Triangles
*Cut a total of (46) assorted 2" squares

From all of the 6" squares of med/dark print and/or woven fabrics:

*Cut a total of (81) assorted 2 3/8" squares for Half Square Triangles

(Note: After I cut the requirements listed above, I cut more Half Square Triangles so I would have more fabrics to play with in each block.  Just thought I'd mention that.)

This is a lot of cutting, I know, but guess what?  You're cutting now for all your blocks!  Once it's done, all there's left to do is sew!  Speaking of sewing.....

Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of all of your light print 2 3/8" squares.  Mix and match them with the assorted medium and dark print 2 3/8" squares.  Sew 1/4" on each side of the drawn line; cut apart and press to the dark.  Make at least (162) Half Square Triangles that should measure 2" unfinished.  As I said, make more if you'd like extra color/fabric print options to play with when making your blocks.

I know this is a lot of cutting and sewing now, so I'm giving you TWO WEEKS to accomplish this task.  Once these HSTs are made, we'll be sailing through block assembly.  Part Two of the SAL will post on Friday, July 12th.

Ready, Set, Sew......

PS....you might want to think about ordering my Hints book for perfect HST every time!  Not only will you find my HST technique in there, but hundreds of hints, tips, and how-to's for all kinds of quilting basics ~ from fabric preparations, to piecing techniques, to quilt labels. 1. Do you use anything to "perfect" up your HST (e.g., Thangles, Bloc-Loc rulers, other)? Or can you do it with just perfect cutting? (I always seem to have problems...)

    1. No matter how many HST's I make, I always make them larger than needed and trim them to "perfection". ALWAYS! I've tried Thangles and other papers, and while they're good, I can still have imperfect HST's for a variety of reasons. I love Creative Grid rulers, and use a square for this process.

All the how-to's, along with sizing charts, and how to convert the make it larger technique to standard patterns is in the Hints book. Not hard, a little time consuming, but worth every minute for the results!

      Hope this helps!

  2. Your instructions today say cut from 11" squares; however, on the cutting instructions, you specified 10 inch squares. Which is correct, or does it matter?

    1. Good question! In my initial blog post some time ago, I did say to cut 10" squares, and I did change it to 11". You will be perfectly fine with your 10" square, but just decided to add a little more room. No worries!!

  4. So excited to get started. I found some of your plaids and dobbies in Gettysburg this week. :-) Glad you gave us two weeks. I won't get started until we take grandson home next Wednesday. On second thought, maybe he'll help me...

  8. Hi Pam!
    I am confused....
How do we get from 11 inch strips to 2 3/8 triangles?
    Somewhere I missed a step!
    Thanks, this will be great!
    Take care, Leslie

  9. I got my kit today! The odd time I've done any mystery I've never been happy with my fabric choices, so this time I decided to order a kit...especially because your fabrics are exactly the type I like, and I've been telling myself to do a pieced wallhanging and this way I will do it :) Now to get cutting!
