Never Say Never!

In previous posts, I proclaimed a "disturbance in the Force", a phenomenon known to all Star Wars fans, and a phrase I borrowed to describe a bend if you will, within me regarding a very long standing choice.

A change in a long standing choice.....of what?

Well....this stuff I LOVE!  Say the word cheddar and I'm there, cracker in hand.  Say the word cheddar regarding fabric......well.......not so much.

I'm on record for many years and in several publications that "I don't do cheddar" fabrics.  I know they were popular in the 1800's, and I maintain that I wouldn't have liked them then either.  It's just a personal thing and I know I'm in the minority here.

About the change.....so have I changed my mind?  No....not really.  Confused?

The good folks at Marcus Fabrics called a few months ago to ask me if I would design a few cheddar prints for them.  Not one to shy away from a challenge, after a few minutes of thinking about it, and reminding them that cheddar is not in my wheelhouse, I accepted the challenge for several reasons.  Designing cheddar fabrics is much easier than designing a quilt using them, and......I think it's good to step out of your comfort zone now and then to stretch your imagination and skills.
This new collection, called Cheddar & Friends has just 12 sweet prints.

These are the six new Cheddar prints.  They range from a warm autumnal orange to the very bright classic cheddar orange.  There are prints suitable for small blocks and others for large pieces such as setting squares, border and sashings.

The trouble is, for those quilters who really enjoy using Cheddar prints, they're not often available, so this little group will help them feed their stash!

Cheddar make up six of the new 12 prints.  What about the other six?

During my conversation about the cheddar collection, I mentioned my love of taupe color fabric and how that color was another that is also missing on the quilt shop shelves.  I notice a definite trend for using more and more taupe fabrics in CW Reproduction style quilts.  I don't think it was an authentic color of the time period... I think what it does is give an aged look to quilts made with it.  We've all seen antique quilts where the muslin or light print looks brown and dirty and that is the color the taupe can show.  It's a warm color that I adore.  A true taupe is hard to find.....or shall I say WAS hard to find!

The "friends" in Cheddar & Friends are the six taupe fabrics included in the collection.

The darkest print is a chocolate brown with taupe and burnt orange.  It mixes the two fabrics beautifully and would be gorgeous as a border or sashing with the cheddar and taupes.  I can hardly wait to begin playing and designing with them!

Click here to see the entire Cheddar & Friends collection.  The fabrics will be delivered to your local quilt shop in March, so if you like them, ask your favorite shop to order them!

Normally, I offer Fat Quarter and Fat Eighth bundles of every collection I desing but hesitate to do so with the collection.  I'm sure interested in hearing what you think about the Cheddars and the Taupes.

If you have time, please leave me a comment about what you think and I'll choose a bunch of winners for free patterns AND a few people will get a Fat Eighth of these new fabrics.

As any loyal Star Wars fan would say.....may the Force be with you!  Especially this weekend with the release of Rouge One!  Teehee!

  1. I love them all! I haven't used much cheddar, but my tastes are changing and I'm starting to do more Civil War quilts. these will be a welcome addition to my stash.

  2. I love your new fabrics. A few years ago I was on the hunt for cheddar and found that good ones were very hard to find. I will look forward to finding your cheddars and taupes next spring so that I can use them in upcoming quilts.

  3. Love these gorgeous colors. They would make a beautiful fall/autumn quilt!

  4. All twelve fabrics are beautiful, but I love, love, love the cheddars. It is hard to find just the right cheddar. Thanks for stretching outside your comfort zone and creating these wonderful prints!

  5. I love using cheddars to add a bit of warmth to the pattern. Taupes are of high value, too. Lovely collection and I hope my LQS will add them in the Spring (she's a Marcus lover).

  6. Love your new fabrics! It took me awhile to warm up to cheddar also, but now I absolutely love it and the pop it gives when you use it. As you said, Never say Never.

  7. I love cheddar and your new fabrics are gorgeous! The taupes are a perfect complement. Can't wait to try them all.

  8. The right cheddar is so hard to find and this line is perfect. Thanks so much for designing it.

  9. these are simply gorgeous....am definitely putting at least the 6 cheddars on my list...perhaps a FQ or half yard bundle of each? just a thought...

  10. Cheddar and taupe, be still my heart.

  11. March!! That's too long to wait for all those yummy cheddars. I Love them all!

  12. I'm with you on the cheddar thing. I wasn't a fan, BUT.. your new collection makes them look good enough to eat! I'm a convert.

  13. I too am not a cheddar fan but am coming around. Please offer this collection as you have done with other collections. I would like to add these into the stash ;)

  14. I AM a fan!!! I buy cheddar whenever I can, and I will certainly be snatching up these when they are available! I actually love cheddar with purple, so I will combine some of these lovelies with your Old Plum Calico line, for sure! Absolutely thrilled with this disturbance in the force, Pam! : )
And the taupes are lovely. I don't buy precut bundles very often, but I would buy a fat eighth bundle of this collection in a heartbeat. I might even consider a fat quarter bundle of just the cheddars.

  15. Good for you to push the box walls out and design these cheddars. They're beautiful, and that's from a gal who's not been interested in joining the cheddar fan club. All your fabrics really are nice, always nice collections.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Why are you hesitating to offer these in bundles? I'd love to get my hands on those cheddars and taupes. Unlike you, I love them and can't get enough! Thank you for the preview and I'll be on the lookout for them in March.

  18. I love taupe fabrics. ummmmm cheddar not so much.

  19. I am very excited to see your cheddar fabrics. I love them in quilts and you always design such beautiful prints. And the taupes-you are correct. They will give that lovely aged quality to repro quilts. Great job!

  20. I love your new cheddars and now I'm hungry for cheese!

  21. When I first began quilting I was told yellow was a very hard color to work with. Well, I love yellow (and cheddar) and I have been working it into my projects anyway. And I love this new collection.... please pick me for the fat-eighths !!!! Mamin50@yahoo.com
Ok, I will stop begging now. Seriously, this is a much-needed group of fabrics for us yellow-lovers. Thanks for creating them.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I am so glad you stepped outside your comfort zone box and designed these beautiful fabrics for the rest of us-they are absolutely gorgeous! I recently purchased a pattern that these will be perfect for-so sad to have to wait until next spring.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Oh my, those cheddars are stunning, cant wait to get them and I am seeing a fall quilt with those in my future. Thanks for designing them and wishing you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Wonderful prints! I can never find good cheddars so glad you jumped in.

    ReplyDelete
  25. You are so right about it being difficult to find both these colors for our stash. My first thought would be to bundle the taupes and bundle the cheddars. That way, people would be able to fill in their stash with what they need and the not strictly CW quilters would have the option to buy the taupes.

    ReplyDelete
  26. At the risk of sounding like a heretic on your blog, I am not a fan of reproduction fabrics. I very rarely use them. But, this collection is totally beautiful and I can see buying and using every one! Thanks for moving out of the box - you struck a homerun with these cheddars and taupes.

    ReplyDelete
  27. LOVE the cheddar and the taupes are going to a great addition to use with your blue, red, and plum fabric, also. So glad you stepped out of your box!!

    ReplyDelete
  28. I really love all the fabrics and would definitely buy them. It is hard to find good cheddars and yours are beautiful. Great job!

    ReplyDelete
  29. I have never used cheddar in a quilt, but I am now a new convert! I really like the patterns in the fabric.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Beautiful! I am a fan of cheddar and taupe. Thank you for the chance to win- blessings

  31. Oh....you've certainly disturbed MY force, in a very good way, I was late to the cheddar bandwagon so being able to add to my miniscule stash along with much needed taupes (yes, the quilt world is lacking), would rock my ship for sure! Thanks for taking the plunge, Pam! You are a force to be reckoned with!
    Cheers!

    ReplyDelete
  32. I was in a quilt challenge and had use cheddar. I grumbled at the time, but now I LOVE cheddar! Fat quarters aren't enough, you should offer 1/2 yards, as cheddar fans will rejoice. Thanks for stepping out of your comfort zone.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I've always loved oranges/cheddars/yellows and golds, and you're absolutely right, really pretty cheddars are often hard to find. I love this new collection! And "taupe" is so much more sophisticated than "beige" or "brown" don't you think?

    ReplyDelete
  34. These are great. Love the cheddars. Would love to make a mini with cheddar and blues.
Thanks for sharing your inspirations and a chance at the giveaways.
    Merry Christmas šŸŽ„šŸŒŸ

  35. I love cheddar.....and I always wondered why there wasn't more cheddar to pick from. I'm always nervous about using what is in my stash because I'm afraid I'll need it later and won't be able to find it! Beautiful collection of both cheddar and taupe! Thanks so much for designing it and the opportunity to win!

  36. ooooooo cheddar, yes, yes, yes...and thank you :)

  37. Hi Pan, sounds like a great task and challenge and you did a wonderful job! The cheddar and taupe line is delicious! I am a big CW fan and last year I did a block swap with some of my besties. We all were given different colors to work with. One of the newbies to our group was given cheddar and my fist thought was I'm not to crazy about this idea. But I must say the cheddar is just what this house block swap needed and our sweet newbie's blocks made the quilt a stunning show stopper! Thanks for being up to the challenge and going with the force! I'm looking forward to using your cheddar in a quilt next year!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Wonderful, wonderful, hope my quilt shop buys the whole collection. Love them.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I love the cheddars! I love adding them to my reproduction fabric quilts. I especially love to add a touch of cheddar to turkey red and green quilts!

    ReplyDelete
  40. LOVE ALL THE PRINTS IN THE COLLECTION!! What more can I say-they are gorgeous and will work great with all my CW fabrics!

    ReplyDelete
  41. I say YES to bundles of this collection. I will be first in line!

    ReplyDelete
  42. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE your new cheddar/taupe collection!!! I have always wanted to make a cheddar quilt-it's been on my bucket list for many years and after seeing the beautiful fabrics that you have designed and the pattern that goes with it, I think I need to put it on my 2017 to do list.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I also have shied away from cheddars - the fabric, not the cheese! But am planning on focusing on colors out of my comfort zone next year!
    I think these are beautiful
    Happy Holidays everyone

  44. Gorgeous shades. The cheddar color range is what will make a quilt sparkle. I'm typically not drawn to this color except when I quilt, My quilt needs to have a little yellow or orange in it. Now off to have a grilled cheese :)), with all of this cheddar talk it's made me hungry.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Absolutely love cheddars and can't find enough of them. Even though I will probably buy yardage of the cheddars, I would still be interested in 1/8ths or 1/4s in bundles. Good Job. Love them all.

  47. Yes, I love cheddars! I'm also a blue freak, and I think cheddar is a great complement to blue. I think I'm going to need the entire collection! On Sunday, I get to see the new Star Wars movie at a private screening--whoohoo!

  48. I love every single one of them! I love all the different prints. My stash is lacking in both of these colors.

  51. Hi Pam, I'm with you... Not a big Cheddar fan... BUT!!! I LOVE your new Cheddar & Friends range. They are delicious. I will have to wait until they come DownUnder as the postage is a real killer, otherwise I would be ordering a FQ bundle today!

  58. I'm with you on Cheddar fabric, but these are not the harsh cheddar that has the same effect to me as fingernails on a chalkboard. These give the effect of Cheddar without the glare of it. I think it will be very usable. Thank you.

  59. This is a beautiful collection - great job designing!! I would love be able to purchase a bundle of these yummy fabrics!

    ReplyDelete
  62. I am not a big cheddar fan but do use the color sparingly sometimes. My friend loves cheddar, should I be lucky enough to win she will be gifted! The taupes would be mine! Your fabrics are beautiful.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Love, love, love . . . cannot wait.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Can't have too much cheddar in a scrap quilt. It makes the other colors sing. Love it! Would love to have some new ones to play with.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I love both the cheddars and the taupes! I don't care for orange fabrics, but I love cheddars--and yes there is a difference. The tone of cheddars is just different than oranges and I love the taupes, because they are richer than creams. Gorgeous collection!

    ReplyDelete
  71. I adore chedder. Thanks for going out of your box! Happy Christmas!

    ReplyDelete
  72. I have some deep purples in my stash that need these cheddars! The black with a touch of cheddar is a perfect background. Can't wait until it's out. I'd like fat quarters (or fat fourths) of just the cheddar and another set for the taupe. It would give me a better chance to use more cheddar and less taupe (have you seen my stash!). And definately a bunch of yardage in the black!!

    ReplyDelete
  73. I love cheddars and taupes. What's not to love - such richness is inspirational. Never mind the fat eighth and fat quarter bundles. Just go for the half yards and full yards. Don't mess around.

    ReplyDelete
  74. I love cheddar fabrics and I think offering these fabrics in fat eighths and fat quarters is a great idea. It's especially nice to have a group like this when working on projects for the fall, Halloween or Thanksgiving. I look forward to seeing them in person!

  80. I just recently bought some cheddar fabrics and these will be a nice addition, but, not as pretty as your purples! I now understand your "disturbance within the force". It's not as exciting as Star Wars. I can think of more exciting things like free fabrics or patterns???

    ReplyDelete
  81. I love the taupe fabrics especially the dark chocolate one with the cheddar. There are a couple of the cheddars that I like, but I have never really been a fan of cheddar fabrics. I like the ones that are more gold than orange. I can see where they will fit a need in the lines, though!

  85. Being a fairly new quilter (going on two years), I have never HEARD of cheddar as a fabric! I think you did a wonderful job in the designing of the fabric since you really don't care of it. I would love to have them in my ever-growing stash.

  86. Love the cheddar and tapes! Hope you are doing well! I am very lucky because I do not have to have back surgery. When I got the Radio Frequency treatment they irritated some other nerves and it caused me the problems! Happy Happy - doitrightquilter.wordpress.com. Nanette

  87. Cheddar reminds me of Jaundice which is what my skin tone turns to when using it in clothing. But it is a warm color to me in quilts and I appreciate it very much because my grandmother used it often. Your designs and colorways are wonderful. Thank you for the opportunity to share my feelings with you.

    ReplyDelete
  88. All of these fabrics you have designed are beautiful! I have been wanting to make a mini quilt with the cheddars, so I will definitely be looking for these fabrics in the spring. I'm so glad you took the challenge!

  89. I have become a fan of cheddar in my Civil War style quilts the last couple of years. I avoided them for a long time, then slipped one in one day. What a difference it made. Now I grab cheddar fabrics whenever I see a new one. Can't wait for your new ones to come out. Mmmmm, March, my birthday month. Maybe a gift.

  94. I am like you in that cheddrs have not been my favorite. However, my mother loved cheddar and I inherited her stash so I have used SMALL pops of cheddar in a few quilts and was pleased with the result. In your design, combining cheddar with those gorgeous taupes is inspired. I think I would like to add some blue or even navy to the mix to make a quilt. Maybe I will learn to like cheddar after all too! cotten.gloria@gmail.com

I completely love this collection - it's really gorgeous, and I know from previous collections of yours that the griege goods are scrumptious. I'll be adding this to my Civil War repros stash!

  128. I love both the colours of fabrics and I think a fat eight bundle would be great, it would be easy to add a little of these colours in all my scrappy quilts

  129. I love the Cheddar and Friends line and will be picking it up as soon as possible. I wish you would reconsider and offer the fat quarters! Either way, I'm buying them when available. Merry Christmas to you and your family.

  130. I love the Cheddar and Taupe line - just what the CW quilters need! I am always looking for a good blender and can't wait to purchase the taupe. Also, like you, I need to challenge myself so I am committing to make a quilt including your new Cheddars! Can't wait :) Thanks for the give away

  131. I, too, am a recent convert to cheddar (fabric that is, always have been with cheese. Have you ever had Cotswald - an orange colored cheddar with chives? Yum...I digress). I'll be looking for this collection in March because I would like to use cheddar as a main fabric in a scrap quilt. As for taupe - Yes! - Bring it on! Greys are one of my neutrals, and there aren't a lot of them. My favorite neutral is red because I took a workshop with Freddy Moran years ago. (I'm digressing again!) Thank you!

  132. Your new cheddars are wonderful! So sad we have to wait until Spring for their release! Definitely! Bundle them!

  133. I wouldn't be a true cheese head if I didn't love all forms of cheddar.

  134. I was never very fond of cheddar fabrics but the darker ones might be a welcome challenge. Your taupes are like beautiful dark neutrals.

  135. LOVE LOVE LOVE your new cheddar fabrics! I think it's great that there are different shades and patterns to add texture and they really pop against that dark chocolate fabric. Great job!

  136. Cheddar, chrome yellow, poison green -- these are three shunned sisters of the repro world :-( And I love BRIGHT, and I bet many 19th century women grabbed every 'bright' they could as a change from city and farm dust browns. So I make repro quilts with these (and purples) and buy every time I see them. By the yard. And I don't see them in the shops very often at all.

  137. I'm not a huge fan of cheddars either, but these are quite lovely. I like that there is a variety of tones. And the taupes and chocolate put the whole grouping over the top!

    ReplyDelete
  138. Love, Love, Love this collection! I will be adding all of these. I especially love the taupe...please do more in this color range. I use the taupes for my 'muslin' in my quilting. Your cheddars are very nice in their tones...not too harsh as many are. Again Love it!

I absolutely love cheddar. So happy to see some more coming out. Can't wait to get some more. Oh, like the brown and taupe also. You're right, there are no taupes out there. Hope I win a bundle. Kay Hunzinger

I have never used cheddar, but I have seen some quilts with it that I really like.

  141. You did an awesome job with the cheddars . . . yummy enough to get those crackers out and dig right in! (are the taupes representative of crackers???) YUM! (lynnstck@[at]yahoo.com)

  142. I am not a big fan of cheddar either. But these fabrics are totally cute and could see myself using them. Great addition to anyones stash.Shaunna

  143. I AM ALWAYS EXCITED TO SEE WHAT YOU ARE UP TO!!! You never dissapoint me either... AND THIS OF TIME I AM THRILLED!!! Love ❤️ this color palate, it just suites my primitive ways. I'll be watching for it in my quilt stores, THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR HARD WORK

  144. I think both groups of these fabrics are gorgeous. I've never used cheddar in a quilt. I don't often find fabrics I think are cheddar, and then I debate with myself whether they are or aren't. I think the taupes are wonderful. I can rarely bring myself to use white, always want a cream or a tan or a color not quite white, but they are hard to find. Thanks for creating these colors and fabrics!

  145. I have an indigo, taupe and cheddar quilt floating in my head for 2017! Absolutely beautiful new releases. I'll keep my eye out for them in my local shop! Thanks for sharing preview!

  146. LOVE your new Cheddars, and look forward to adding them to my stash! I am making a series of Charm Quilts, and Cheddars will really add zing to them!

  147. Love it! Love it! Love it! I've already downloaded the free pattern from the Marcus Fabrics website and I'm now ready for precuts and yardage of Cheddar & Friends!!! :-)
Even the classic snowball block can be made with this fabric.... we'll name it "Cheese Balls"!!! lol!

  149. I didn't think I liked cheddar until there was that "one" quilt - and I was hooked. Look forward to seeing this in March. Happy Holidays

  150. I like cheddar in small amounts in reproduction style quilts, but too much is overwhelming to me.
Your cheddars and taupes are gorgeous!

  151. This collection is wonderful! Oranges that don't scream "Halloween!" but will give a wonderful pop of color to any quilt. The richness of the Taupe colors is just what many small quilts beg for. A wonderful break from white or cream. You do a lovely job with the density of the prints. Just perfect!

  152. What a beautiful collection. The cheddars are gorgeous. A true cheddar is so hard to find. I will be watching for these in the future. The browns are so becoming. My mind is floating with ideas as to what to make. Thank you for some beautiful prints.

  154. A simply lovely collection Pam. My favorite fabrics to work with are civil war reproductions. Your cheddars and taupes are wonderful and congrats on taking on the challenge - super job and can't wait till they are available šŸ˜Š

  155. You are correct when you say that good cheddar fabrics are difficult to find. These are stunning! I can't wait 'til they become available.

I haven't used these colors either but do have a couple of the cheddar just waiting for a few more to do a project!!

  157. I've always loved cheddar colored fabrics but never collected enough to make a whole quilt. I did use orange to make a Halloween quilt for my son. Real cheddar isn't easy to find, I love your designs they're perfect. Merry!Merry!

  158. I LOVE your cheddars! My fingers and toes are crossed. Do the blessed souls who win fabric also have to wait until March?

  159. Drool! I happen to love cheddar (they play well with green, purple, browns - so much). Yours are lovely! For a girl who doesn't like cheddar you certainly stepped up to the plate!

  160. I've always been a fan of cheddar and could never find them until recently. I think your collection is wonderful and the taupe is the perfect companion. Seeing the first picture made me want to reach in, grab them, and spend the day petting them. I can envision such a beautiful quilt made with them. Thanks for taking up the design challenge and winning it so we can have beautiful cheddar fabric. I'll be keeping my eye out for them and adding them to my quilting.

  161. Just WOW! Never met a cheddar I didn't love and I think it pairs well with any color other than yellow (which I also love). Please bundle these as I doubt they will be available anywhere near me in southwest Texas! clarksara0@gmail.com

  164. I've only got 2 small chunks of cheddar in my entire stash -- partly because they've found a home in a few projects. I have been hanging onto a pattern that would be perfect in any one of your cheddars. You've definitely created a winning collection -- LOVE every one of your calicos. I would be honored if I was one of the lucky ladies to receive your generous gift! Can't wait until March!! MERRY CHRISTMAS, Pam, from SW FL!! judi.82@live.com

  165. I don't usually seek out cheddar to use in my quilts, but your new collection is wonderful. Come March I will be seeking them out.

    ReplyDelete
  166. Absolutely LOVE the new collection!! Cheddars have been especially challenging to find around my neck of the woods. I love the taupes that go in the collection as well as sometimes it's difficult to find just the right fabrics that complement a good cheddar. You did a great job with this collection and I'm really looking forward to getting my hands on some!
