Nabby's Dowry Sew~Along Part Twelve

Welcome to the Big Reveal!!!

Here's what you've been working toward these past many weeks.....

Nabby's Dowry Sew~Along Quilt

I really, really hope you like how the quilt has turned out!!!  I'm loving it.  Having the blocks set on-point gives them a new look, and I love the "Flying Geese" points radiating from the center square.  The quilt has lots of movement to it as your eye travels from place to place, and the quilt setting not only calms the quilt, but also serves to separate and anchor the blocks.

Here's the cutting instructions for finishing your quilt:

From the 3/8 yard of light for setting triangles:

*Cut (2) 12 5/8" squares - cross cut twice for side triangles.

*Cut (2) 6 5/8" squares - cross cut once for corner triangles.

From 3/8 yard of red print for sashing:

*Cut (3) 1 1/2" x WOF strips; subcut (18) 1 1/2" x 6 1/2" strips for block side sashing.

*Cut (4) 1 1/2" x WOF strips.  These are the long, horizontal (in-between rows) sashing strips.   

Measure the length of your rows and cut.

From the 1/2 yard of brown plaid for borders:

*Cut (4) 3 1/2" x WOF strips.

From the 1/3 yard of red for binding:

*Cut (4) 2 1/4" x WOF strips.

Finishing instructions:

*Sew your quilt top together in a diagonal set.

*Sew a 1 1/2" x 6 1/2" strip onto the sides and in between the blocks; in all cases, press to sashing.

*Arrange the long sashing strips, the blocks, and the setting triangles as shown in the photo.  Sew together, diagonally, into rows; again, press to the sashing.  Sew rows together; press.  Your quilt center should measure approximately 30 1/4" square.

*Sew brown plaid side borders first, then top/bottom borders; press to the borders.  

*Your Nabby's Dowry quilt should measure approximately 36 1/4" x 36 1/4" unfinished.

I know everyone enjoys seeing all the different quilts just as much as I do!!  All you have to do is sew your top together.  It does NOT have to be quilted!!  Email a JPG photo of your quilt to me at Pam@HeartspunQuilts.com.  Tell me where you live (state or country is good) and anything else you'd like to add.  Like, how you chose your fabrics, why you participate in sew-alongs,  what else is happening in your life....anything you'd like to share.  I think it will be fun to read about other peoples experiences, and what they've been sewing with, etc., while we've all been piecing together.  After all, we've been meeting here on my blog every Friday for the last 12 weeks!!  So, lets get to know each other a little better!  If you'd feel more comfy just giving your state or country, that will be just fine, too! No worries!!

Nabby's Dowry Sew~Along Part Eleven

I sure hope that you have been enjoying the blocks we've made so far.  Can you believe we're almost at the end of our sew~along?  It's gone by so fast!  Here's your next block...

Arrange (8) light squares and (8) HST as shown.  

Sew together as you have all of the other blocks.  This time, though, MAKE (4) blocks!  Yup....you need four of these babies!  They should all measure 6 1/2" unfinished.

I'm so jazzed for next Friday's post when I can reveal what the quilt looks like!!!  I've been planning this quilt and sew-along for many months.  We're almost there!!

Sew into rows; press for opposing seams or press seams open.  Then sew rows together to make this classic block.  Be sure your block measures 6 1/2" unfinished.

Nabby's Dowry Sew~Along Part Seven

Are you wondering how many ways we can play with HST's?  Way more than we will, I assure you!!  Here's your next block....

I've thrown some squares into the mix this time.  You'll need (12) HST and (4) squares.  Arrange them as shown.....

By now you surely know the drill....sew into rows; press, then sew rows together for a 6 1/2" unfinished block.  

Did you like making all the HST units the first week?  With all of that done, it makes the block assembly pretty quick!  Let's meet again next Friday....

Nabby's Dowry Sew~along Part Three

Wasn't your first block easy, breezy?  I thought so, so let's continue with easy, shall we?  Here's block two....

This time, you'll need (12) HST's and (4) squares.  Arrange them as shown in the photo......

Sew them into rows; press in opposite directions for opposing seams.  Sew the rows together; press.  You block should measure 6 1/2" unfinished.

Nabby's Dowry Sew~Along Part Two

Now that you've made lots of Half Square Triangles, we're ready to begin sewing blocks!  Yay!

As I said before, this quilt is ultra scrappy.  If you're making your quilt from the fabric kit, don't worry about matching your HST fabrics to mine!  It won't matter at all in the finished quilt.  I could just as easily picked up a different bunch of fabric combinations or HST's for this block.  Trust me...just have fun and play!

Arrange (16) HST exactly as shown.  

Sew together in rows; press for opposing seams or press seams open.  Sew rows together; press.  Your block should measure 6 1/2" unfinished.

Nabby's Dowry Sew~Along ~ Part One

Welcome to Part One of my Nabby's Dowry Sew~Along!  

I'm anxious to get started and I'm hoping you are, too!!  

Ready, Set, Cut!

Cutting Instructions

From all of the 11" squares of light print and/or woven fabrics:

*Cut a total of (81) assorted 2 3/8" squares for Half Square Triangles 
*Cut a total of (46) assorted 2" squares

From all of the 6" squares of med/dark print and/or woven fabrics:

*Cut a total of (81) assorted 2 3/8" squares for Half Square Triangles

(Note: After I cut the requirements listed above, I cut more Half Square Triangles so I would have more fabrics to play with in each block.  Just thought I'd mention that.)

This is a lot of cutting, I know, but guess what?  You're cutting now for all your blocks!  Once it's done, all there's left to do is sew!  Speaking of sewing.....

Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of all of your light print 2 3/8" squares.  Mix and match them with the assorted medium and dark print 2 3/8" squares.  Sew 1/4" on each side of the drawn line; cut apart and press to the dark.  Make at least (162) Half Square Triangles that should measure 2" unfinished.  As I said, make more if you'd like extra color/fabric print options to play with when making your blocks.

I know this is a lot of cutting and sewing now, so I'm giving you TWO WEEKS to accomplish this task.  Once these HSTs are made, we'll be sailing through block assembly.  Part Two of the SAL will post on Friday, July 12th.

Nabby's Dowry Sew~Along Preparations

I'm happy to report that all of the fabric kits have been cut and mailed, which means we can soon being the sew~along!  It all took about a week longer than I had planned because the fabric arrived a little late, but...no worries!  We're good to go!

Nabby's Dowry Sew~Along

begins Friday, June 28th!!

In preparation for the start of the sew~along, I want to recap the fabric requirements for those of you who may just be joining us, or if you need a refresher.  

To make my Nabby's Dowry quilt from your own fabric stash, here's what you'll need:

10 - 11" squares of assorted light prints or wovens

25 - 6" squares of assorted medium/dark prints or wovens

3/8 yard light print or woven for setting triangles

3/8 yard red print for sashing

1/2 yard brown print or plaid for borders

1/3 yard binding

1 1/6 yard for backing

Additional scraps if you desire....just because more fabrics are always better!

I've received quite a few emails asking what the sew~along is all about, so allow me to invite you to visit my blog (almost) every Friday for 12 weeks, beginning June 28th.  Each week, I'll post a new block or step in the process of making this mystery quilt.  The pattern is free!  Just drop in to see what the next step is and sew~along with me (and just a few quilters from around the world!)  

The best way to receive the weekly instructions for the sew~along is via email.  To get my blog posts via email, simply enter your email address in the "Follow by Email" icon found on the right-hand sidebar of my blog.  That way, you can easily print the sewing instructions and take them to your cutting table or sewing machine.  

This quilt is very, very scrappy.  So long as you have strong contrast of light to med/dark fabrics, you'll be fine.  You can always hold off on choosing your setting fabrics until you see what the quilt will look like, choosing colors and fabrics for a particular place in your home.  I used browns and reds for the setting and borders, but any of your favorite colors will work.

So....put a new blade in your rotary cutter, clean, oil and put a new needle in your machine....the fun begins on Friday!

Announcing My Next Pocket Patchwork Sew~Along!

I'm so excited to give you the preliminary information about my next Pocket Patchwork Sew-Along!  The quilt project is named Nabby's Dowry and it features all of the fabrics from my new fabric line, Pin Money, as well as most of the Prairie Wovens, Dobbies, and Chambray line, too!  You may know that Pin Money was named for First Lady, Abigail Adams, and her daughter's name was Abigail as well, but the entire family called her Nabby.  Perhaps Abigail pieced a scrappy quilt for her daughter?  I liked the thought and that's how I came up with the name.  I know...weird how my mind works!

This will be the largest quilt we've made in my sew~alongs thus far, measuring approximately 36 inches square.  The block size is 6 inches finished, and is very, very scrappy!  There are lots and lots of Half Square Triangles!

I will post the sew~along instructions every Friday for 12 weeks, making it the longest sew-along as well.  But, don't worry...it will be easy, breezy and lots of fun, suitable for all skill levels.   You can certainly use your scraps and choose your own fabrics, but just in case.....
